3 Steps to Reduce Anxiety At Work and Home
Imagine 20K (mostly inebriated) fans waiting with bated breath to cheer or jeer your golf swing while you're on one of the biggest stages in the world. That was the case last weekend at the #TPC Waste Management tournament on the 16th hole in Scottsdale, AZ where Sam Ryder and Carlos Ortiz got their aces. I got a chance to play the same hole a few days later...however, the shot is always easier when no one is watching!
While I can't guarantee a resting heart rate to remain under 65 during stress, I work with teams and leaders to develop #trust and #confidence in one another to perform under pressure. A few helpful hints:
Know who you are and who you're not! Find your swim lane and surround yourself with those that elevate you (and vice versa)
Learn how to breathe! Sounds easy right? Science shows that nasal breathing is far more effective than breathing through the mouth (i.e. air gets to the lungs more efficient). Several techniques (#boxbreathing, #wimhofmethod, #nasalbreathing) are really effective before tense situations (meetings/presentations/tough conversations)
Develop affirmation statements in the present tense (i.e. I am currently confident at.....vs. I will try......). Develop these affirmations, write them 3X before going to sleep daily and change your neurological "sound tracks" over the next 60 days.
These are just a few exercises for your and/or your team to reduce #anxiety, develop #confidence and perform at your BEST! Post any other techniques you use when you're on the big stage and please reach out as I would love to learn more so that I can post additional comments on #leadership and #teamdevelopment.
